BIOFEEDBACK REHABILITATION SERVICES
Owen P. Kieran, M.D., Director

What is Biofeedback?

Biofeedback is a technique whereby you learn to alter your physiology to improve your health. It is used to treat headaches, hypertension, pain syndromes, Raynaud's Disease, anxiety and stress related disorders, depression, addictions, disorders of the digestive system, and paralysis and other movement disorders, among other health related problems.

What conditions does Biofeedback Rehabilitation Services treat?

Biofeedback is utilized with the following conditions: Stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, peripheral nerve injury, Parkinson's Disease, facial palsy, as well as other disorders resulting in paralysis, gait imbalance, and movement difficulties.

How does Biofeedback work?

As you attempt to move, the computer processes and displays information from your muscles. The therapist helps you to interpret these data and to alter, if necessary, the way in which you move to produce the correct response. When you correctly replicate the response outside of the therapy environment, it is considered learned. The goal is to learn to move correctly without the use of equipment.

How can I get on the Biofeedback program?

Do insurance companies reimburse for Biofeedback?

Insurance companies differ in their reimbursement criteria. Also, different policies with the same company may have different criteria for reimbursement. Often a letter of medical necessity is necessary for the insurance company to determine whether this will be covered. We will help you submit this information after you have been evaluated by Dr. Kieran. There is often a lag time between an evaluation for Biofeedback and the actual start of therapy because of this.

Medicare often reimburses for Biofeedback Motor Retraining when the patient is no longer making progress on their present program.
